 Webcam Pros and Cons

With a webcam surveillance system, software detects motion, so that recording only occurs when something is moving in front of the motion sensors. The webcam does this by capturing two images, and then comparing them for discrepancies. This set-up saves hard drive memory space and time because the captured images can be instantly e-mailed to the user. These software applications also allow the user to host the images through the built-in web server so that he or she can easily access them via a static IP address.

Some of the drawbacks of using webcams for home security include their fixed positions that limit their range, and the fact that they are USB-based devices that can’t be more than 16 feet away from the computer or USB hub. In addition, webcams generally do not perform well under low-light conditions as compared to most wireless home security cameras, so one must remember to switch on a light for extra illumination.

Wireless Gets Better and Cheaper

Home video security systems can rely on wireless IP technologies, wireless sensors, and webcam surveillance. There is a home security camera to meet the security needs and fit into every homeowner’s budget. It is estimated that over half of home surveillance systems purchased today are using wireless technologies. Says Jeff Hoover, past president of the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association, “As video systems get better and cheaper, more and more people start to use them.”

Pocket DVR Recording Device

 What is a DVR?

Digital video recorders (DVRs) are replacing VCRs as recording devices in the video surveillance industry. While they are still somewhat more expensive than VCRs, their advantages are immense.

One of the most significant is their ability to adjust to what they see: if they’re recording a static image, such as the inside of a warehouse at night, they may only record 1 frame every 5 or 10 seconds. But when they detect movement, they can instantly switch to full video to capture any suspicious activity.

Because they record to hard drives, you can instantly watch any specific time – no waisting  time -forwarding and searching for the right moment. They also let you jump to ‘events’ – situations where the picture changed. And don’t overlook the fact that they don’t have tapes: you won’t have to worry about storage or tapes deteriorating.

With each passing year, technology plays an increasingly prominent role in our everyday lives. As we look at what is in store for video surveillance in 2008, this trend certainly holds true. Video surveillance technology for home security cameras as well as for business is emerging to become even more proactive and innovative than ever before. As this technology continues to advance and become more intelligent, it becomes even more widely accepted as an invaluable security tool.

 Every 20 Minutes

Whether you like it or not, we can’t ignore the reality that crime exists in America. In fact, statistics indicate that a robbery or violent crime is committed somewhere in the country every 20 minutes. This certainly does drive the point home that even though prison populations may be increasing, crime rates are not going down. Chances are your home will be affected by crime at some point. If you have not protected your home and family from assault and burglary, you are simply waiting for disaster to occur. Don’t think that you can’t afford it. Advances in technology have made personal security devices affordable to all of us. Alarms and security cameras for home, and self defense products like stun guns and pepper spray for personal protection. We can all do our part to make our homes and neighborhoods a safer place to live.
