 Only Take What You Need

It seems we all  carry alot of our personal possessions around with us these days. Cash , checkbooks, credit cards, personal organizers and mobile phones are just some of the everyday items that are sorely missed if they are lost or stolen. All of these things might seem invaluable, but according to the police the best advice for hanging on to your possessions is “only take what you need with you”.

Try to appear relaxed, but at the same time be aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets like busy streets and crowded places, and someone bumping into you could well be a thief. If this happens, check if you still have your things with you, but don’t make it too obvious that you’re doing this a thief might be watching and you are letting them know where all of your things are.

ATM cash machines are part of our everyday lives. They offer convenience to those on the run but at the same time there is an element of risk.  Using an ATM machine safely requires awareness and a little planning.  Just because an ATM machine is open and available 24-hours a day doesn’t mean it is safe to use it.  Most ATM robberies occur at night between 8:00 PM and midnight.  ATM robbers are usually males under 25 years of age and most work alone.  ATM robbers are usually nearby waiting for a victim to approach and withdraw cash.  Most ATM robbery victims are women and were alone when robbed.  Most claim that they never saw the robber coming.  Most ATM robbers used a gun or claimed to have a concealed weapon when confronting the victim and demanding their cash.

Trust Your Instinct  

Avoidance is always the best self-defense strategy. The first line of defense against a violent situation is to avoid it. Trust your instinct and do not hesitate. The more aware you are, the more you will prevent an attack.

Be vigilant in maintaining your mental and physical alertness. If you cannot, consider not proceeding with your task or trip, and do it when you can be alert.

Experts often say that those who survive attacks are people who have trusted their intuition, planned possible escapes ahead of time, and kept a clear head throughout the crisis. Close the entry door completely upon entering an ATM facility equipped with a door. Do not permit any unknown person(s) to enter an ATM facility with you after regular banking hours.
If you notice something suspicious or feel uncomfortable, cancel your transaction and leave the ATM immediately. Report all crimes immediately to the operator of the automated teller machine or to local law enforcement.
When using an ATM or point-of-sale (POS) terminal, shield the keypad while entering your PIN.
Put your cash in your handbag or pocket immediately; wait to count it until you get home or are safely in your car.
Take your transaction receipt with you. Do not leave it at the ATM.
When using your Debit Card for purchases, review your sales slip before signing it and check to see if the correct amount has been filled in. Never sign a blank sales slip.
Make sure the merchant returns your card to you when your purchase transaction is complete.
Memorize your PIN. Do not write your PIN on your card and never give your PIN to anyone. The bank will not call you to request the information.
Protect your card as you would cash, checks, or credit cards. Report lost or stolen cards to us immediately.
